Look back:  Read back over 1 Samuel 3:1-4:1a and remember the inauguration of Samuel’s prophetic ministry represents a new era where the word of the Lord is again common in Israel.

Look ahead: This coming Sunday, Pastor Michael will be preaching from 1 Samuel 4:1b-22. Read the passage several times during the week with your family.

Ask: What happened to the ark? Why do you think God allowed that to happen? How was God's judgement against Eli and his family carried out?

Pray: Adoration: Praise God for his sovereignty and justice. Confession: Confess any sin the passage brings to mind, including the tendency we may have towards empty religion and false worship.  Thanksgiving: Give thanks for the gospel and the redemption we have in Christ.  Supplication:  Pray for lost people you know, including those in your family.

Sing: Visit the blog for this week's music. You can also find our music playlists on Spotify.

A: That we we are not our own but belong to God.

From Sunday School August 28:

CHRIST CONNECTION

This is the big idea of how this week’s Bible story points to Jesus.

  • Younger Preschool: Everyone has sinned and needs God’s mercy and forgiveness. We can ask God for forgiveness and because of Jesus, God will forgive our sin.
  • Kids: The tax collector knew he needed God to forgive him, and he cried out to God. Everyone is a sinner who needs God’s mercy and forgiveness. Jesus took the punishment for our sin by dying on the cross. We can cry out to God like the tax collector and because of Jesus, God will have mercy on us.

BIG PICTURE QUESTION & ANSWER

  • Younger Preschool: What is mercy? Mercy is when God does not give us the punishment that we deserve.
